We're looking for a Barista with a love for books to join our unique coffeeshop/bookshop on Portobello High Street!

Our cafe and second-hand Tills & Company, on Portobello High Street, are  looking for a Barista to join the team at our new project in books and coffee.

We are looking for an experienced barista, with a love for literature and lattes, who is up for working in a different kind of space to your typical cafe.

Tills & Company is also a second-hand bookshop, stocking a library of over 5000 books. While this job is for a Barista, we are looking for somebody willing to be trained in how to run the bookshop, and a willingness to occasionally help out with book sales and organise book displays when the cafe is quiet.

To thrive in this job you would be open-minded, detail-oriented, and enjoy the buzz of a busy Saturday serving hot drinks and cakes as much as you love quiet, rainy mornings flicking through an old book.

We're seeking someone with:

  • Particularity and passion when it comes to coffee and presenting it with care.

  • Eagerness to engage with customers from diverse backgrounds, offering book recommendations and discussing the cafe’s offerings.

  • Attention to detail, ensuring both the bookshop and coffeeshop areas are well-maintained and inviting.

  • A love for books: reading them, organising them, researching them, and discussing them with customers.

Your Role:

  • Making delicious coffee and lovely teas

  • Preparing and serving light snacks

  • Cleaning and maintaining book and coffee areas

  • Managing coffee inventory

  • Engaging in conversations with customers about coffee and books

  • Ensuring the coffee station is presentable

Essential Qualities:

  • Experienced barista

  • Passionate about books

  • Organised, tidy, and independent

  • Reliable, trustworthy, and friendly

  • Able to work weekends

Desirable Qualities:

  • Happy to take on prep work: bake, make soup, and prepare sandwiches.

  • Interest in translated literature, new writing, small presses, and coffee culture

  • Willingness to handle general maintenance tasks.

Hours and Pay:

  • This role is 36 hours/week

  • We are open to hiring 2 applicants on a part-time basis of 18 hours/week, so please feel free to apply for a half role if you think you’d love this job but cannot commit to full-time.

  • Potential for increased hours during peak tourist seasons.

  • We pay £10.90/hour.

If this unique blend of books and coffee excites you, please send a CV and a short cover letter to jobs@tillsbookshop.co.uk.

Deadline for Applications: 26th November 2023.

Interviews/Trial Shifts: Week of the 27th November 2023.

Thank you for your message! We'll try and get back to you as soon as possible.
