Tills Books is Hiring!

Fancy working in a tiny wee bookshop? Read on!

Tills Bookshop is looking for somebody to join our small team on a part-time basis. The position would start as soon as possible.

The role would involve working both in our main second-hand bookshop, and on our new project, based out of an old Edinburgh police box, where we plan to focus on new fiction from independent presses.

So we’re looking for someone with a love of books both old and new. You should have a meticulous attention to the straightness of book spines along a shelf, a passion for cool displays, and a good knowledge of great books and writers across different genres.

We need someone who is:

  • First and foremost passionate about books: reading them, organising them, holding them under your arm in the rain, smelling them (in a covid-safe way).

  • Ready to share their enthusiasm with customers from all walks of life, while not pestering customers too much with your quirky tastes and obscure passions (it’s a fine line).

  • Attentive to the small details, able to make sure a display looks beautiful and the shelves are full.

The role will involve:

  • Selling books.

  • Cleaning books (gently erasing previous owners names, lovingly removing old price stickers).

  • Pricing books (eventually).

  • Chatting to customers about books.

  • Advising people what we do and do not buy when they bring books in to the shop.

  • Politely turning away terrible books that we definitely don’t want to buy, while not insulting anybody.

  • Enthusiastically accepting books that we love when they walk in off the street.

  • Organising the books that get brought in to the shop so we can assess and purchase them.

  • Restocking shelves of books.

  • Diligently straightening the spines of books as they run like silk across the dark wood facade of our shelves.

Essential qualities:

  • Booky

  • Organised

  • Tidy

  • Independent

  • Reliable

  • Trustworthy

  • Friendly

  • Flexible with working hours (within reason)

Desirable qualities:

  • Some experience in book-selling and/or publishing, or experience in customer-facing roles.

  • A knowledge of or excitement about new writing and small presses.

  • You know how to dress a window.

  • You don’t mind occasionally cleaning a loo, sweeping a floor, or lugging lots of books around the place (if you are able to).

  • You can think of your feet when somebody asks you for a recommendation.

This is a flexible hours position, but we guaranteed a minimum of 8 hours/week.

However we anticipate more hours would be available over August and September, as the tourism picks up and we launch our new police box bookshop. So would be looking for somebody with the flexibility to do 12-18 hours a week over the next two months. Shifts are arranged a week in advance.

We are a little unsure what October and beyond will bring, but we will always guarantee the minimum 8 hours/week.

We pay the real living wage, which is currently £9.50/hour.

If you think that this role seems like the right fit for you, please send a CV and a short cover letter to

Closing date for applications: Friday, 6th August 2021.

Thank you!
